Hey friend!

Another cupid’s day is here again,

And here you are,

Single to stupor.

Wait…

I’m not mocking you,

We’re in the same gang.

“God, when?” “God, please!” “God, weneva yu redi;” or “God, not now abeg”.

Whichever department you are in,

We’re all sha single pringles.

Now, I know the popular things you’ve heard,

Because I’ve heard them too.

“Don’t awaken love until its time,”

“Marriage is not your purpose,”

“It’s better to be single now and wish you were married than to be married and wish you were single.”

As valid and truthful as those statements are,

That’s not why I’m writing to you.

I’m writing to dream with you.

Yes, that dream you had last night,

And some occasional nights before that.

The one where you met your beloved,

On a magical, rainy day, or Lagos-like sunny day,

And you just knew that you would spend forever with them.

The dream where you’re walking hand-in-hand,

Barefoot on the grass, feeling every spec of sand between your toes,

But ignoring that because you’re lost in the euphoria that is your lover’s eyes.

Or maybe the dreams about picking your children’s names,

Or more serious scenarios like how you’d resolve conflicts,

Or divide chores,

Or make money for the family.

Yes, my love.

Those dreams.

I’m writing to you to tell you that they are valid.

Every last one of them.

Whether you can’t wait for them to come true,

Or you could care less when cupid’s arrow hits you,

Your dreams are valid.

Not just your financial or career goals,

But your love goals too.

You will find and be found by your beloved,

And they will be the best thing that ever happened to you.

Like my mentor would say to her beloved,

They would be the best decision you made after salvation.

Till then, my dear,

(You really are dear to me, hence, this letter)

Don’t lose sight of the one that found you before you found him,

And literally fell head over heels for you.

He thought you were worth it and would do it again.

He is the definition of love.

He is love personified.

So while you long for the cuddle nights with your beloved,

Focus. Yes, focus,

On the one whom you live for.

Ayooluwa, what are your valentine’s day plans, you might ask.

Omo, my day will actually be quite busy,

But every time I can catch a break,

I’ll sing a love song,

Thinking of you,

Yes, you!

At least, till the one who can’t get you out of their mind comes along.

Today, feel free to consider me the boo of the booless.

Send me love song recommendations though.

That can be your valentine’s gift to me,

As this letter is mine to you.

I’m always here,

To dream with you.

All my love,

Your hopeless-romantic friend,

Ayooluwa.

How beautiful and pleasant you are, O loved one, with all your delights! Song of Solomon 7:6 (ESV)
